Primitive beliefs and culture like the Trokosi System: Wives of gods

The Trokosi system is a deeply entrenched practice in West Africa, particularly in countries like Ghana, Togo, and Benin. Let me provide some insights into this traditional system:

What Is Trokosi?

  • Trokosi involves sending young virgin girls, often as young as six years old, to religious shrines (known as “fetish shrines” in Ghana) to serve as slaves.

  • These girls are offered as “wives of gods” to make amends for perceived wrongs committed by a male member of the virgin girl's family.

  • The practice is rooted in the belief that the gods demand retribution for family transgressions, and the sacrifice of a virgin girl serves as atonement.

How It Works:

  • Families select a virgin girl from their household to be dedicated to a shrine.

  • Once at the shrine, the girl lives and works under the authority of the shrine’s priest or high priest.

  • They may bear children within the shrine community, perpetuating the cycle.

  • Their education, personal development, and freedom are severely restricted.

  • Her duties may include performing rituals, cleaning, cooking, and other tasks.

  • These girls face physical and emotional hardships, often enduring abuse and isolation.

  • She remains in servitude for the rest of her life, serving the gods and the shrine community.

  • If a girl tries to escape or dies, she must be replaced by another girl from the same family.
